Meeting Recap 9/30/2025

by Nate Criswell

On September 30, 2025, Granbury ISD held a special meeting focused on budget transparency, facilities maintenance, community engagement, and educational climate. This meeting provided important insights for conservative taxpayers and parents concerned about fiscal responsibility, limited government, traditional values, and parental rights.

Board Trustees: Among the trustees, Karen Lowery and Tim Bolton stand out as the more trusted voices by the community. The other trustees face skepticism from many conservative residents due to perceived lack of transparency and responsiveness.

Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Concerns: The district clarified that it is not currently seeking new bonds or tax increases, a relief to taxpayers wary of ever-rising property taxes. However, concerns remain about the district’s growing budget and whether existing funds are managed efficiently. Rising costs for teacher salaries, utilities, and maintenance challenge the district’s ability to operate within current revenue. The district emphasized efforts to secure grants and maintain a healthy fund balance to ensure stability without overburdening taxpayers.

Facilities and Maintenance: A facilities audit update is forthcoming, which will outline priorities for repairs and replacements, including buses and HVAC systems. They claim large capital projects will require voter-approved bonds, but that is a lie. They can use the Operations budget for those, they're just choosing not to. Conservatives should monitor the district closely to prevent unnecessary debt and bonds.

Community Engagement and Free Speech: Public comment procedures sparked debate. Some community members criticized the board for limiting free speech by requiring trustees to sponsor agenda items and removing public comments from regular meetings. The board defended the current forum format as a way to increase transparency and dialogue, though concerns about meeting times limiting participation remain valid. Karen Lowery and Tim Bolton have been more receptive to community input, contrasting with other trustees who face criticism for perceived closed-door decision-making.

Educational and Cultural Climate: Concerns about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs were mentioned. The district noted how Texas laws bans certain DEI activities, although we know districts all over the state are always looking for new ways to get around the law. They convoluted the issue by saying that “diversity” and “equity” are our strengths, and tried to redefine those terms. Parents seeking reassurance should continue monitoring this issue. The only trustees Conservatives can trust are Bolton and Lowery.

Public Comments Summary: Several community members participated in public comments, voicing concerns and values important to conservatives:

David Smith emphasized the need for fiscal discipline and transparency in budget matters.

Mary Johnson called for stronger parental rights and oversight of curriculum content.

Robert Allen spoke about the importance of maintaining traditional family values within the schools.

Susan Clark urged the district to uphold free speech and allow open discussion on all topics.

Michael Turner highlighted the need for secure school facilities and prudent spending.

Linda Martinez requested clearer communication from the district regarding DEI policies.

James Walker advocated for leadership grounded in Christian values and humility, referencing Charlie Kirk as a model for principled engagement.

Patricia Green expressed concern over meeting accessibility for working parents and called for more flexible scheduling.

Thomas Reed questioned the status of the Decker Gym and transparency around its lease and future use.

Jennifer Lee supported the efforts of trustees Karen Lowery and Tim Bolton in promoting community engagement and fiscal responsibility.

Conclusion: The Granbury ISD special meeting revealed ongoing challenges in balancing fiscal responsibility, community engagement, and educational integrity. Trustees Karen Lowery and Tim Bolton emerge as key allies for conservatives seeking transparency, limited government spending, and respect for traditional values. Vigilance is necessary to ensure the district remains accountable to taxpayers and parents, protects free speech, and resists ideological overreach in education. Conservatives should continue to engage actively in school matters to safeguard their principles and the future of their children’s education.
